and chrome tube lugs. I especially like the unusual stamped
metal badge which lets the finish show through. The overall
visual effect of the drum is very classy.
This beautiful drum placed first in the plywood division of the
2009 Snare Drum Olympics. Dixon is a relative newcomer in
the drum building world. They made only hardware for years
but delved into drum building when Kaman, the parent company of Gretsch Drums and LP bought the company. The model
DS-0613-RWD has a 6˝ x 13˝ 9 ply 100% Rosewood shell. The
finish is beautifully lacquered and hand buffed which results
in a mirror gloss that looks very deep. The inside and outside
plies are vertical grain. Standard hardware on the shell are the
2.3 mm hoops, Evans heads, Dunnett throw off and butt plate,
How does it sound? Well, you can judge for yourself at our
website where the videos of all the 2009 Olympics drums reside. I thought the drum sounded bigger than it looked. It has
quite a fat, rich tone for a 13˝ drum; very pronounced low and
mid frequencies. It was also very articulate and the snares responded well from edge to center, with just enough controlled
head sustain around the outside perimeter of the head to give
the player some alternate sounds to pull from. The list price of
this drum is $729 and includes a nice padded bag.
