Your attention please! Three major announcements!
#1 NSMD is now free at every drum shop and drum show in America, and online
#2 The NSMD Ohio Drum Show is just around the corner Sept. 19
#3 The Snare Drum and Cymbal Olympics has been rescheduled for Feb. 2010
“Print is not dead! It just smells funny!”
NSMD is changing with the times. With this issue, the print magazine will now
be given away for free at every drum shop and every drum show in the U.S.
and also at select music stores, drum schools, teaching studios, and college
percussion departments. It has been free to view online for a year now at our
website. There is still a paid subscription delivery component and a bookstore
cover price. Why? The short answer is for the survival of the magazine. Sales
and subscriptions have been declining for years mostly due to free drumming
content on the internet and now the recession has taken its toll. My research
shows that readers now want their magazine content delivered in a mixture
of three ways: free on the internet, free in print, and home delivery by paid
subscription, so that is what I will deliver.
This has allowed NSMD to, in one fell swoop, grow its distribution to 20,000,
reduce its per issue printing cost by 75%, and greatly increase the advertising
sales . It puts our advertisers in front of a much larger and very targeted consumer base without raising ad rates immediately.
We have actually lowered rates for drum shops and small custom manufacturers. You can buy color ads for as low as $50 per issue. Look for the page count
to increase soon with more vintage and current content, and more ads. AND,
believe it or not, this will also raise the number of paid subscriptions for home
delivery of the magazine. If you know of a drum shop or dedicated drum department at a music store or any drummer centric venue that is not carrying
the free magazine yet, please contact me and l will make sure that they receive
free copies to distribute!
Keith Carlock and his band Rudder have been added to the Ohio Drum Show
on Sept. 19. Please search You Tube for Rudder and Keith. Killer band! Killer
drummer! The $20 ticket includes the exhibit hall from 10 to 6 and the first
concert at 6: 30. There is a second show at 9:00 with a separate ticket. There are
still booths available but they are going quickly. Just look at the exhibitor list in
this issue or online. There are more than twice as many exhibitors as last year.
Don’t wait until the last minute to get a cheap $100 booth.
The Snare Drum Olympics and the Cymbal Olympics have been rescheduled
for February 2010. With the growth of the Ohio Drum Show, the growth of the
Snare Olympics (61 drums last year), the addition of the Cymbal Olympics,
and the logistics of staging the Carlock/Rudder concert with my small staff,
that’s fit to report!
